Offline RPGs that respect your time

Mobile RPGs have a bad reputation, and often it's deserved. Too many of them are just meters filling up while you tap. But a few genuinely deliver a story worth your evening, and crucially they work without any connection.

Emberwake Saga is our current favourite. The writing carries it, and the turn-based combat asks you to think instead of grind. We finished a long session on a flight with the app in airplane mode the whole time.

When we judge an offline RPG, the first thing we check is whether progress saves locally and whether the game sulks when there's no signal. A shocking number fail that basic test.

The second thing is pacing. Good mobile RPGs let you play in short bursts without losing the thread. If closing the app loses you five minutes of progress, we say so loudly.
